…NCoS says no formal court document for his release
The Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed that it has not released a former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu from the Kuje Correctional Facility because a court order for his release has not been received.
The Service spokesman, Chuks Njoku, disclosed this while reacting to reports that a Federal High Court ruling in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of the former governor.
According to Njoku, the Service will keep the Abia Senator until it obtains the court judgment and the warrant for his release from the correctional centre.
He said: “We cannot act on the basis of the radio or television announcement on a Court Order or ruling. The ruling will be communicated to us in the form of warrant. This would be acknowledged and all other protocols and procedures would be followed.
Court orders immediate release of Orji Uzor Kalu from prison
“As things stand now, we are yet to be communicated (to). And unless this is done, he will remain with us.”
When he was asked about the duration of keeping him till the formal communication comes, Njoku said, “It depends on when the court reached the service with details of the ruling. Hopefully within the next two days.”
It will be recalled that Justice Mohammed Liman ruled on Tuesday that the former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu be released immediately from Kuje Prison, Abuja.
The release came after Kalu asked the court to order his release from the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Kuje, Abuja, following is nullification of his conviction from the Supreme Court.
