NMA, NUT: Schools cannot reopen because nobody wants to die

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have faulted the Federal Government’s plan to reopen schools.

Recall that the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had on Monday ordered the reopening of schools for just students in graduating classes; primary 6, JSS 3, and SSS 3.

The NMA and NUT have however said that the plan is not well thought through.

The two groups said that the reopening of schools would only expose teachers and students to the deadly coronavirus.

They also complained about inadequate resources and insufficient pay of teachers which might not enable the teachers to afford the necessary protective gear.

Prof Innocent Ujah and Mike Ene, president of NMA and general secretary of NUT respectively have said that asking students to resume at this point when the virus is on grest increase is very risky.

They made further complaints about how some schools do not even have running taps.

The NUT speaking on behalf of teachers said that they cannot resume because nobody wants to die.

It was also mentioned that in some local governments, teachers are still owed the meagre salaries which they are paid.

The NUT and NMA have urged the FG to have a rethink of their plans and come to a resolve which would be in the best interest of the general public.
