…Validation of rapid COVID-19 testing underway
The Lagos State Government has said it has spent over 800 million naira on COVID-19 testing since the outbreak of the disease in March.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akinola Abayomi who disclosed this on Thursday during a televised news briefing on the update of the COVID-19 fight in the state, the state has been paying for each test conducted.
He said that each test costs about N50,000 and that over 16,000 tests have been conducted in the state so far.
He said the State will continue to make testing free, but is looking to partner with aid agencies to subsidise the cost of the test.
Professor Abayomi also disclosed that Lagos will soon validate its rapid testing strategy in order to be able to confirm if a person has been infected with coronavirus within ten minutes.
He said the rapid testing will be deployed across all hospitals for all those coming into the hospitals to get tested for COVID-19 before being allowed into any health facility in the state.
He also said that the rapid testing will be used to test health professionals to know those who have been infected before but survived and have now become immune to the virus. This, he said, will enable them to carry out their functions with more confidence.
Professor Abayomi also clarified that the reason Lagos was recording more cases than Kano despite demographic similarities was because Lagos has more testing centres than Kano.
