…Biden gets 1,991 delegates
Former Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden on Friday disclosed he had clinched the delegates needed to conclude Democratic nomination and combat Donald Trump in November’s presidential election.
“Folks, tonight we secure the 1,991 delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination,” Biden said on Twitter.
“I’m going to spend every day fighting to earn your vote so that, together, we can win the battle for the soul of our nation.”
He passed the 1,991 threshold to secure his party’s nomination as the country progressed for Tuesday’s round of Democratic primaries.
Biden had been the speculative Democratic challenger since Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders bowed out of the race in April and endorsed his one time rival’s run at the White House.
Biden extended the threshold with the country plunged into protests over the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of the police.
Floyd’s death has rekindled long-felt anger over police killings of African-Americans and unleashed nation wide wave of civil unrest unlike any witnessed in America since Martin Luther King Jr’s 1968 assassination.
“This is a difficult time in American history. And Donald Trump’s angry, divisive politics is no answer,” Biden wrote in a post on Medium.
He further stressed that the country needs leadership with unity as its main agenda. “The country is crying out for leadership. Leadership that can unite us. Leadership that can bring us together.”
