…Parents eager to see Govt reopen schools

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen schools shut down since March. But the government is tinkering with the idea of reopening the schools in the coming weeks.

Nigeria Today’s correspondent Mazeedah Opeyemi spoke to six mums about the decision and if they would allow their wards to return to schools with the fear of COVID-19 infection still very much around.

Below are what they said:

1. MUMMY OLUCHI

I will like it, but they will make sure that they sterilise the classrooms before the students resume. Also, the decision by the federal government to divide the classes into two sections, morning and afternoon, is also a good one, because the style was also existent during the olden days.

2. MUMMY WISDOM

I do not believe that the government wants to reopen schools. But I want my children to go back to school, and the COVID-19 should also stop. We are tired! No food! No money! Nothing! They should open everywhere, let the students go back to school. Parents should also know how to take care of their children. The government should also provide personal protective gear (hand gloves, nose cover, sanitizer, etc.). It would be okay like that. The student should resume because the fact that they are at home is only making them duller. Most children have forgotten what they have been taught, all in the name of COVID-19.

3. MRS. AKINLE

Since they say they want to reopen schools, let them provide what the students would use. Parents should also be wary of their children’s health before they go back to school and even when they are at school. For example, if a child is coughing or sneezing, he/she should not go to school but stay at home. This is how we are going to stay safe. Let the government reopen schools as the students have stayed home long enough.

4. MRS. MUSTAPHA

What I think is that if coronavirus has stopped, they can allow the students resume, because the stay at home order is for our own benefit so that we do not contract the virus, but if they want to reopen schools then we believe that God will take control and send coronavirus away. I also don’t believe that dividing the classes into two sections, morning and afternoon, will work out well because the teachers might not be able to take the second batch as well as the first batch. But if the government can find a solution, then there’s no problem.

5. MUMMY MOHAMMED

I think it is okay for the students to go back to school. If the federal government can open the markets which are more populated than the schools, then what is stopping them?

6. MRS. ENITAN

I think it is very good for them to go back to school because the time they’ve spent home is too long. The children play a lot and the fact that they are at home is reducing their knowledge. I think the federal government should focus on the kids since they are still very young; they play with sand, pick objects from the floor, etc. The students should wash their hands well, before eating and after eating and after using the toilets. Also, in public schools, the students should no longer sit in 4s, instead, they should sit in 2s in order to ensure social distancing.
